Stain wipes, pens or sprays: what's worth carrying?
Compare stain wipes, pens and pre-wash sprays: packaging, separate-cloth needs and product-specific fabric guidance to help choose what to carry.

Wipes, pens and sprays are each made for a different job. The right one depends on where you'll use it, and what you're happy to carry.
Here's how Pocket Wipes compare with two specific examples: Tide To Go's US-listed pen and Vanish Pre-Treat Spray's UK-listed bottle. Instructions vary by product and country; these examples do not describe every pen or spray. Always check the label on the product you buy in Australia.
| Pocket Wipes | Tide To Go pen — US example | Vanish Pre-Treat Spray — UK example | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it's packaged | One wipe in its own sealed sachet | A capped pen, reused until empty | A 500 ml trigger bottle |
| Uses per unit | One | Many | Many |
| Cloth or rinsing needed | No separate cloth; no routine rinse | Directions suggest a napkin behind the stain, then blotting the excess | Made to pre-treat before washing as usual |
| Fabric guidance on the label | Cotton, linen, wool and silk; patch test first | Most colourfast, machine-washable and dry-cleanable fabrics; test a hidden area first | The example checked advises against wool, silk and leather; check your bottle |
Stain pens: made for repeat use
A pen carries many treatments in one unit, which suits a desk drawer or glovebox. The example checked suggests a napkin behind the stain and blotting afterwards, so it works best with a little space and a spare napkin.
Pre-wash sprays: made for the laundry
The Vanish spray compared here is a pre-wash treatment. You spray, give it a few minutes, then wash the garment. It belongs beside the washing machine rather than in a handbag.
Stain wipes: a cloth and formula together
A single-use wipe holds the formula and the cloth in one sealed sachet. You open it, treat the fresh stain and put the sachet in the bin.
Pocket Wipes sachets are 2–3 mm thick, fragrance free and stay fresh for up to 24 months unopened. The formula is made for fresh coffee, red wine, sauce and light makeup on cotton, linen, wool and silk. It normally needs no rinse. If a ring appears, rinse the wipe with a little water and gently dab the area, following the three-step method and garment-care notes.
What all three have in common
Whatever you carry, a few rules still apply:
- Patch test first on a hidden area
- Treat stains while they're fresh
- Follow the care label on the garment
- Take a precious piece to a professional cleaner if a mark remains
Choosing what to carry
Keep a pre-wash spray at home for laundry day. A pen can suit a desk drawer or bag when repeat use is the priority, provided you follow its instructions. For the bag you carry every day, a sealed, single-use wipe is the contained option: no extra cloth, nothing to refill and almost no space taken.
Always prepared. Nothing to explain.

These are product-specific examples, not a claim about all wipes, pens or sprays. The pen source is a US listing and the spray source is a UK listing; Australian labels may differ.
